Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is a condition characterized by abnormal ovarian function and an increase in male type hormones. 

The clinical signs and symptoms of PCOS are variable, but often include:

 

  • Irregular or absent ovulation/periods
  • Male pattern hair growth
  • Moderate to severe acne
  • Obesity
  • Insulin resistance. 

The symptoms of PCOS often present around the time of puberty, but can present later in life.  Most people with PCOS will not have all of the signs and symptoms. 

Women with PCOS are at higher risk of other health problems, such as:

  • Diabetes
  • Heart Disease
  • Sleep Apnea
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Infertility
  • Uterine Cancer
