Handwashing is one of the best ways to protect yourself and your family from getting sick.
It is easy to do and the most effective way to prevent the spread of germs from your home to the workplace to childcare facilities and hospitals.
Follow these simple 5 steps and you will be on your way to better health.
1. Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), and apply soap.
2. Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.
3. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. How long is 20 seconds? Hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to the end twice.
When are those all important times to wash your hands?
- Before, during and after preparing food
- Before eating food
- Before and after treating a cut or wound
- Before and after caring for someone who is sick
- After using the toilet
- After changing a diaper or helping a child who has just used the toilet
- After blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing
- After touching an animal
- After handling a pets food
- After touching garbage
4. Rinse your hands well under clean, running water
5. Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.
Wet, lather, scrub, rinse and dry it is as simple as that to live a healthier life.
