Pelvic support problems are typically encountered by women who have had children and elderly women. Pelvic organ prolapse occurs in women when the muscles of their pelvic floor are no longer able to support the pelvic organs. “Many women have some degree of pelvic organ prolapse,” says Dr. Tina Ramsey, OB/GYN with Women’s Health Specialists. “While some women may not experience any symptoms, those that do find great relief after proper diagnosis and treatment.”
Symptoms of an issue with your pelvic floor can include:
- Urinary incontinence
- Lower back pain
- Your pelvic feeling heavy or full, causing pressure
- Bulge in your vagina
- Having problems putting in a tampon
- Sexual discomfort
“The most common symptoms patients come in with are incontinence and an uncomfortable feeling of pressure. What they don’t realize is that pressure is actually caused by the uterus or another organ pressing against their vaginal wall,” commented Dr. Ramsey. “There are several different types of prolapse, and determining the specific cause is key to providing the best treatment. That’s why it’s so important to be completely open with your OB/GYN at your appointment.”
“Treatment plans for pelvic organ prolapse can be as minor as lifestyle changes and special exercises, and range all the way to surgery if necessary,” shares Dr. Ramsey. “Your treatment options will depend on the severity of the prolapse and other factors, such as your plans for children in the future.”
