Heading off to college is such an exciting and scary time for young women, especially for those who are moving away from the comfort of home. In the young adult years, a woman’s body is still changing and there is so much to learn.

Before heading off to college, be sure to schedule an appointment with your Women’s Health Specialists provider to talk about any questions or concerns you might have regarding normal periods, birth control, STDs and more. During the semester, if you are away and cannot come in for an appointment, give us a call with your concern and we can either help you over the phone or point you in the right direction so you are never without care.

Many young women deal with irregular periods, PMS, or even endometriosis and poly cystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) symptoms.  If you think you may be dealing with any of these symptoms, be sure to let your provider know so that you are not dealing with severe symptoms while you’re away at college. Your focus should be on good grades and enjoying school, NOT hormonal concerns.

Even if you do not plan to be sexually active in college, it is always wise to know what birth control options are available for you and to be educated about STDs. Birth control is nothing to be ashamed of as many women use it to manage their menstrual issues and having a plan ahead of time will make you feel more comfortable about making the right decisions later on.
